Obesity in humans has long been recognised as a growing problem but health issues relating to obesity in cats and dogs have received far less attention. Although some owners have wisely taken out pet insurance to prepare for bills in the event of an accident or illness, few realise the serious health risks posed by dietary problems caused by unwitting owners.
According to a report by Pet Ecology Brands, the US News and World Report found that "the number one health problem for dogs is obesity".
Poor quality dietary habits can lead to serious health problems for cats and dogs, for example a fat rich diet could cause diabetes, skeletal stress, heart and lung problems, skin and kidney diseases and immune system difficulties.
Vets advise that along with cat and dog insurance, owners take a preventative stance by not allowing their pet to become overweight in the first place. A good quality diet and plenty of exercise are key to ensuring a healthy pet.
Owners must particularly be aware this Christmas time, with leading pet experts warning that the rich food synonymous with the season can play havoc with pets' diets.
