02 February 2006 Pet insurance needed to tackle dog thefts
A rising number of dog thefts has led to calls for people to ensure that they have protected their animals with pet insurance. Direct Line Pet Insurance has experienced a 40 per cent rise in claims over the past three years, while one animal website has had 200 dogs registered as stolen since the start of the year.
"It used to be largely travellers in rural areas who stole animals, but now you get dogs stolen from inner cities too," said Jane Hayes, who runs a website for owners looking for lost dogs.
"Thieves used to target pedigree dogs, which can be sold on; now, they take cross-breeds and mongrels too, because owners will pay almost anything - I have heard of sums like £25,000 - to get them back."
Pet insurance can help towards the costs of ensuring that if animals are stolen then their owners have a greater chance of retrieving them.
Although expensive, vets can microchip dogs or tattoo their ears so that they are easily identified.
Some pet insurance policies will also cover the costs of publicity about the lost animal.
