A new survey has revealed the worst place in the UK to be a poor pooch –or a maltreated moggy. New findings from pet insurer Petplan show the best – and worst – places to be a pet in the UK, with owners in the north of Scotland bottom of the study into animal well-being around the country.
Owners north of the border were shown to spend less on dog food than elsewhere in the country and are least likely to offer a reward if the pet goes in search of better cuisine.
Scots are also less likely to insure their pets, electronically tag them or give them a dignified burial.
Owners in the West Country were found to be the best to their pets, buying them Christmas and birthday presents, specially designed beds, and even animal-friendly cars.
Scott Miller, Petplan’s vet consultant, told the Sun: "The age-old perception of the soft south and the tough north certainly seems to hold true for pet owners in the UK. Pets certainly do seem to have it better down south.
"One surprising conundrum leaped out though: a higher proportion of owners in the north of Scotland have taken their dog to a vet for tooth or gum work in the last year than any other group in the UK."
