09 December 2005 Pet insurance need for nation of animal lovers
Affection from pets seems to be the driving reason behind the number of women who own cats, according to new research. In a national survey, Blue Cross, a leading British pets' charity, found that over a fifth of women purchased a pet for the companionship and love that they anticipated the pet would bring. A further quarter admitted that they allowed their cat or dog to sleep in the same bedroom as them.
The south-west of England appears to be the most pet-friendly region, as 58 per cent of residents have an animal, while just 35 per cent of city-slicker Londoners feel the need for canine companionship.
Emphasising the increasing 'humanisation' of our pets, the report also found that the majority of pets are given human names. Issues such as pet health and diet also dominate owners' thoughts, highlighting the practical need for pet insurance.
