14 June 2007  Pet insurance 'is very important'
Pet owners in the UK have been advised of the importance of purchasing adequate cover to protect themselves against the financial costs of veterinary treatment for their animal.

The British Small Animal Veterinary Association reports that pet insurance can cover owners for third-party damage - such as accidents caused by their pet - but highlighted potentially large medical costs as the key reason to purchase cover.

Mark Johnston, a public relations officer at the organisation, said: "Fees are going up well above inflation on an annual basis ? mainly because of the new treatments that are being introduced and all the various new drugs, diagnostic techniques and new surgical techniques."

He added that the expense of orthopaedic treatment necessary following a car accident involving a pet can be especially costly, with the high sums charged for surgery and x-rays.

In April 2007, a survey from Halifax revealed that 59 per cent of Britons did not investigate the full costs of keeping a pet before its purchase
