22 May 2007  Pet insurance claims 'likely to rise over the summer'
British owners have been warned that pet insurance claims are likely to rise over the summer as the number of potential hazards for their animals increase with the temperature.

Tesco Personal Finance reports that between May and June last year, there was a six per cent increase in the number of pet insurance claims, with this rise attributed to the hot weather experienced during the spring.

Pets were more likely to be involved in road accidents as a result of spending greater periods of time outdoors, the company reported, while there is also a rise in cases of vomiting, bites and sunburn.

Monica McCormack, a spokesperson for the firm, said: "We really see an instance of higher claims when the sunny weather comes in and people are outside more with their dogs."

She added that different breeds of pet could face different risks in the summer months, with some cats having a higher susceptibility to sunburn and skin cancer in sunny weather.

Last summer, Halifax Pet Insurance urged British owners to leave their dogs at home during the summer months, rather than letting them overheat in a hot car.
