30 November 2005 Pet insurance an important consideration
As Christmas is fast approaching advice has been issued for people thinking about buying a pet as a present for a loved-one. Although initially exciting, the prospect of becoming a pet owner soon becomes a serious undertaking when one appreciates the numerous factors to be considered before buying a pet.
Woman's Day advised people thinking about buying a pet to consider factors such as space, budget and suitability, especially when young children are involved.
Costs such as pet insurance must also be considered, as the magazine advised: "In addition to food and kitty litter, routine care can cost more than $100 a year for cats (and twice that for dogs).
"And today there are pet specialists ranging from cardiologists to ophthalmologists. This means Fido and Fluffy can pull through diseases - often at great cost."
Research released in the past week has found that in return for the money spent on them, pets can provide numerous benefits for owners, in particular on the health of patients recovering from illnesses.
