12 August 2005 Pet dogs give postmen nasty surprise
The Royal Mail has embarked on a campaign in Wales to ask homeowners to have greater restraint over their pet dogs. It may sound like a "beware of the dog" cliche, but several postmen have suffered injuries recently whilst doing their rounds, according to BBC News.
Between 2003 and 2004, 620 postmen were attacked by animals in Wales, with attacks more likely to occur during the summer months, when doors are often left open meaning dogs can get out more easily.
One postman was injured badly enough to require reconstructive surgery on his hand, prompting Royal Mail officials to ask owners to take more control over their dogs when their post is being delivered.
Dean Birt, from the Communications Workers Union, said: "This was very serious and we really need to get the message across to people that they must keep their animals secure."
