19 August 2005  Pet cats pile on pounds
Concerns over Britons' cats getting fat have highlighted the need for good pet insurance in order to cover the cost of pricey vet bills in the future.

An animal welfare charity in Godmanchester has raised the alarm over moggies piling on the kilos, often with serious repercussions for their health.

Too many kitty biscuits could lead to high veterinary bills for cat owners as obese cats suffer from conditions including diabetes, heart disease and pancreatitis.

The Wood Green Animal Shelter in Godmanchester has recommended that cat owners hold off on the treats in order to safeguard their cats from possible health complications in the future.

"Many of us pamper our pets and in many ways this is perfectly OK, but remember too much of a good thing is a bad idea," warned the charity's spokesperson Alison Campling.

Meanwhile, those pet owners worried that their cats might have too big a will for the Whiskers, should ensure they have comprehensive pet insurance to cover any future treatments.
