27 October 2005 Pet allergies drive need for insurance
A leading pet insurer has called on pet food companies to clearly label the contents of their products after a recent study found that an increasing number of pets suffer from food intolerances. Carried out by insurer More Than, the survey found that 55 per cent of vets have seen a growth in pet illnesses related to diet, and that almost one in ten cats and dogs have food intolerances.
The results have placed a greater emphasis on the need for pet insurance, as diagnosis and treatment can be both a lengthy and costly process.
Sophie de Pelet, More Than's veterinary adviser, said: "Food allergy and intolerance symptoms that pets suffer can be difficult to attribute to diet alone as this can be caused by so many other disease processes.
"Allergy tests carried out by vets can aid diagnosis, but can cost in excess of £200.
"Exclusion diets will be necessary to confirm diagnosis.
"Most pet insurance policies will cover the costs of testing, so pet owners should check their policy details to avoid unnecessary expense," she added.
One veterinary nurse at Europe's leading specialist laboratory in food allergy and intolerance testing for pets claimed that since the introduction of the allergy testing service more than 12,000 pets have been tested for suspected food allergies.
