08 November 2005 PDSA winner announced
A border collie who suffered extreme injuries at the hands of his owners has been awarded the PDSA Pet Survivor of the Year award. Chree was named as the winner due to his determination to live after he was inflicted with open wounds to his abdomen and front legs.
Award organiser, Hilary Nelson, said: "Every year we receive hundreds of remarkable entries.
"This Award is the perfect way for pet owners and veterinary practices alike to share their outstanding survival stories. We seek to recognise both the pets will to live, and the skill of the veterinary team."
Chosen from a list of animals who had all suffered appalling injuries due to owners' neglect, attacks from other animals and accidents, Chree illustrates the importance of vets' knowledge and the need for the funds to pay for treatment.
Without pet insurance, many animals would not be able to receive the months of treatment that is often needed following an accident.
Sonny, a lurcher who was involved in a road crash and was a finalist in the awards, demonstrates how long treatment can take; months of care were needed to repair a badly-broken leg and to prevent further infection.
