09 September 2005  PDSA unveils pet fit camp plans
Vet charity the PSDA has announced the identities of the seven podgy pets that will participate in their PDSA pet fit camp.

The scheme is similar to the Celebrity Fit Club that has been broadcast on TV, but is designed to raise awareness about the importance of looking after your pet.

Recent research revealed that nearly half of pet owners spoilt their pets every day with unhealthy snacks in addition to their regular meals, while a quarter did not provide their pet with regular exercise.

The seven pets will all take part in a 100-day diet and fitness programme, and the owners will be given one-to-one guidance from their local PDSA vet.

The pets will also receive regular check-ups and weigh-ins, and further advice on dieting and fitness for their furry friends.

Other pet owners can do their bit, by ensuring their pet is covered with adequate pet insurance, as well as keeping them fit and healthy.

Liza Randall, from the PDSA, said: "Many of us are aware of the growing problem of obesity in humans, but very rarely do we turn our attention to the diet and fitness of our pets.

"PDSA pet fit camp will take seven of the nation's most unfit furries on a programme that will teach them to drop the bad habits, as well as the pounds."
