04 October 2005 PDSA releases tips for animal lovers
With bonfire and firework celebrations fast approaching, leading veterinary charity the PDSA has warned that animals need special treatment to make sure they don't become stressed. The charity has issued its top ten tips, which along with further hints and pet care advice, can be found in the October issue of Animal Antics, the magazine of PDSAs young peoples club, Pet Protectors.
Young people should make sure their pet is in a safe environment so that it does not bolt or escape if frightened by a loud noise.
They should play some music or have the TV on to help drown out the bangs and exercise their dog before dusk, and ensure it is wearing a secure collar and lead at all times.
Young people shouldn't try to force their pet to play if it really doesnt want to or leave their cat or dog alone in the house when fireworks are going off.
Donna French, PDSA Pet Protectors Club Organiser, said: "Fireworks can be very scary for all kinds of pets. Following our ten top tips will ensure a happy night for all. Children can find out more about pets by joining PDSA Pet Protectors.
"There is a website especially for young animal lovers, www.pdsa.org.uk/youngpdsa."
