13 September 2005 Owners warned over pet indulgence
Owners are being urged to cut down on the number of treats they give their beloved pets, as many are believed to be killing them with kindness. The number of obese cats and dogs has jumped markedly in recent years, with owners becoming increasingly willing to feed their pets treats that would normally be kept for themselves.
Chocolate, biscuits and sausages are regularly provided for cats and dogs up and down the country, and as such one vet company in the north-east has begun a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of being too kind to your pet.
According to Newcastle's Evening Chronicle, Blythman and Partners are undertaking the project to highlight the long-term damage that can be done by allowing your pet to put on the pounds.
The gain in weight can also have a bad effect on an owner's pocket, as veterinary fees will not always be covered by pet insurance, with many insurers refusing to cover obese animals.
