07 March 2006 Owners urged to check pet insurance age limits
Pet owners have been advised to ensure that their animal's age will not prevent them from being able to cover their pet. Although the average life of a medium-sized dog is 13-15 years, according to a survey of vets conducted by More Than, some limits for cat and dog insurance are as low as four and five years of age.
The insurer's survey also revealed that nearly 90 per cent of vets are concerned with the short period of cover that a number of insurance policies provide, with some only covering a 12-month treatment time period.
"With dogs living increasingly longer it's unacceptable for insurers only to cover young dogs," commented Graham Holleban, head of product for More Than.
"Veterinary care has developed significantly over the last decade but as dogs get older they are more likely to suffer illnesses which can often be lengthy and expensive to treat."
The survey also found that 95 per cent of the vets surveyed believe pet insurance to be a responsible purchase for pet owners, as it can ensure that owners are able to cover vets bills in the event of illness or an accident.
