31 August 2007  Owners should take out insurance 'regardless of their cat's age'
Cat owners have been urged to purchase insurance for their feline, irrespective of the age or health of their pet.

Pet welfare charity Cats Protection notes that the distress of having a pet undergo veterinary treatment can be further exacerbated by concerns of how cover the cost of this care.

Maggie Roberts, head of veterinary services at the organisation, said: "Cats Protection would recommend owners take out pet insurance for their cats, regardless of the cat's age.

"Even the most well looked-after cats can develop unexpected illnesses or be involved in accidents."

She added that when a cat requires major surgery, hospitalisation or a simple referral to a specialist, the associated veterinary bills can soon become expensive.

The Pet Care Trust has also advised owners to invest in pet insurance to provide peace of mind, noting that there exists no equivalent organisation to the NHS to pay for medical treatment for much-loved cats or dogs.
