20 February 2007  Owners 'should organise pet passports now'
Owners looking to take their pet abroad with them this summer have been advised by a pet insurance provider to begin the process of obtaining a pet passport as soon as possible.

Halifax Pet Insurance warns owners that an application for a pet passport can take around six months from beginning to end, with the procedure including micro-chipping, vaccination against rabies and worming.

The company added that dog or cat insurance is also essential before travel to protect against the cost of veterinary fees.

Vicky Watson of Halifax Pet Insurance advised that insurance can cover pets while away in the same manner as when they are at home.

"All owners who are considering taking their pets abroad on holiday should act now," she said.

In 2005, a survey by Saga Pet Insurance revealed that eight out of ten pet owners were unaware of the method for obtaining a pet passport.
