12 July 2007 Owners 'should educate themselves on pet costs'
Prospective pet owners should take the time to properly educate themselves on the costs involved when purchasing an animal, it has been claimed. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) reports that pet owners can be caught unaware by expensive veterinary bills over the course of a pet's lifetime.
It also advises owners to purchase pet insurance to pay for unexpected trips to the vet when their animal is injured or unwell.
Rebecca Ralph, press officer for the RSPCA, said: "We would urge people to take out pet insurance as part of being a responsible pet owner to make sure they are prepared for unforeseen veterinary bills that may come up from time to time."
She added that taking out this type of cover is part of being a responsible pet owner, as is making sure you are fully aware of the upkeep costs involved when acquiring a cat or dog.
Earlier this year, pet insurance provider Halifax reported that Britons underestimate the cost of veterinary bills by an average of 103 per cent.
