27 June 2007 Owners 'should buy insurance as soon as possible'
A US-based firm has argued that pet owners should purchase cat or dog insurance when their pet is as young as possible, as it is less likely their pet will be suffering from a pre-existing medical condition at this time.Newly-launched Embrace Pet Insurance notes that if owners wait until their pet is unwell before attempting to purchase insurance, they will not be financially protected against the cost of treating this condition.
Laura Bennett, founder of the firm, noted that it is often still possible to purchase pet insurance for older animals, but warned that the cost may well be higher.
"Your premium might be higher than that of a younger pet and some pre-existing conditions may be excluded," she said.
"The best thing is to enrol your pet when she's young and healthy and avoid pre-existing conditions."
She added that pet owners should view insurance as a means of protecting against unknown and unexpected medical expenses and use other means to financially prepare for routine costs, such as those relating to vaccinations.
In April 2007, Halifax reported that 59 per cent of pet owners did not fully research the costs of keeping an animal before purchasing one.
