03 July 2007 Owners given tips on summer pet safety
Pet owners concerned about the safety of their pets during the summer months have been given advice on keeping their animal safe by musician and Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams. In conjunction with HomeAgain, the actress has given owners tips on making sure their pet is properly identified and chipped to ensure its return home in the event of it going missing outdoors during the summer.
Dr Eric Linnetz, a leading vet at the Davis Animal Hospital who found Ms William's dog Enzo when it got lost, warned that one in three pets will go missing for some period of time this summer.
"There's no better time than the present to do the most you can to ensure your pet's safety in the event that he or she gets lost," he said.
In addition to microchipping, HomeAgain also advises owners to protect their pets from outdoor fireworks and the heat.
Last summer, Halifax Pet Insurance urged owners to leave their dogs at home, rather than coop them up in hot cars which can result in potentially fatal heat stroke.
