02 January 2007 Overweight pets 'more susceptible to disease'
While nearly a third of British pet owners have reported that their cat or dog has put on weight over Christmas, a pet insurance firm has warned that overweight pets are at a greater risk of developing a number of medical conditions.Halifax Pet Insurance reports that overweight pets are at a greater risk of contracting chronic diseases, including arthritis, diabetes and heart disease.
The company states that some of the problem could be caused by owners over-feeding their pets at Christmas.
Vicky Watson, of Halifax Pet Insurance, said: "With so many British pet owners admitting to over-indulging their animals during the festive period, it's important that they offset this by increased exercise, or by the introduction of stricter portion sizes in January."
She added that those owners worried about their pet's weight should consult a local veterinary professional for specialised advice.
Dog insurance provider More Than warned last year that pet owners could be inadvertently poisoning their animals by feeding them chocolates or similar treats intended for humans.
