12 February 2007  One-in-eight to give Valentine's cards to pets
As Valentine's Day nears, a survey from a pet insurance provider reveals that many Britons would prefer to keep their pet company on the sofa, rather than their partner, while 12 per cent plan on giving their pet a card to mark the occasion.

Research from swiftcover.com found that 18 per cent of Britons would choose to share their home with their pet, rather than their partners, while an additional 34 per cent could not choose between them.

Tina Shortle, marketing director at swiftcover.com, said: "It seems some people's pets may be more pampered than their partners this Valentine's Day as traditional romance is replaced with spending quality time with our pets."

She added that Britain is famous of being a nation of animal lovers, with this survey revealing the depth of affection for cats and dogs in the UK.

Last year, pet insurance provider Saga revealed that 45 per cent of cats and 64 per cent of dogs receive Christmas gifts from their owners each year.
