11 January 2007 'One in ten' dogs diagnosed with heart disease
Dog-owners, including those with pet insurance, who are concerned about the health of their dog's heart, may find a recently published study in the Journal of American Animal Hospital Association (JAAHA) of interest. The research stated that dogs can gain an extra three nine months of life when treated with pimobendan, a heart drug from pharmaceutical firm Boehringer Ingelheim, when compared with conventional medication.
"Overall, one in ten dogs will be diagnosed with various forms of heart disease during their lifetime," the company said.
"The most common of these is caused by degeneration of the heart valves, causing them to become leaky," it added.
The study in the JAAHA reported a rapid response to the compound and prolonged life expectancy.
Earlier this year, dog insurance provider Halifax reported that 37 per cent of pet cats and dogs in the UK are overweight, which can lead to increased incidence of heart disease in animals.
