14 December 2005  Obesity 'number one' dog problem
Obesity is the number one problem facing dogs in the UK, according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

With the Christmas holidays fast approaching, the CSP has warned that it is not just people who should worry about piling on the pounds, as overfeeding dogs treats and rich seasonal food could seriously affect their health.

Emphasising the need for pet insurance, the CSP found that 81 per cent of animal physiotherapists cited obesity as the main problem dogs face and that owners are failing to take responsibility for their pets' well-being.

"Canine obesity is a growing problem. Studies suggest it affects 40-50 per cent of all dogs," said Jo Spear of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy.

"The message that dogs need a balanced diet and regular exercise is clearly not sinking in."

In order to tackle the problem, the CSP has launched a free prevention pack which provides advice on how to spot the signs of excessive weight and to control calories as well as suggesting a fitness plan.

Owners of obese pets without cat and dog insurance could find themselves facing large bills, as obesity can put pressure on vital organs and increases the risk of cardiac and digestive problems.
