26 October 2005  New trends in pet ownership and care
A recent survey has found that the amount spent on people's pets continues to be affected by lifestyle trends.

Research & Markets found that although there were a number of trends which had an adverse affect on ownership, such as the move away from dogs towards cats, people continue to lavish their time, money and affection on their pets.

Pet insurance, according to the research, is something that consumers are increasingly inclined to get in order to cover veterinary bills if their pet is involved in an accident or is unwell.

Perhaps surprisingly an issue when it comes to pet insurance, the research found that southerners are twice as likely to take their pet to the vet than northerners are, as well as being twice as likely to have pet insurance for their dog or cat.

Although the research has positive implications for the pet service industry, it also found that 15 per cent of people are still unaware of the advantages that having pet insurance can bring.
