22 November 2006  New canine dental vaccine available
Dog owners with pet insurance looking to improve the dental health of their pet may be interested in the launch of a new vaccine that helps prevent periodontitis in dogs.

The vaccination, developed by Pfizer Animal Health, can be administered by veterinary surgeons to act as a protective measure against the development of canine periodontitis - advanced gum disease.

Pfizer report that 85 per cent of dogs have periodontal disease to some extent by the time they are three.

David Haworth, associate director of veterinary medicine research and development at Pfizer Animal Health, said: "Many dog owners don't check their dog's teeth and gums until they notice bad breath or their veterinarian identifies periodontal disease, yet maintaining healthy teeth is critical to keeping a dog healthy."

Pet insurance provider Sainsbury's Bank reported last year that eight per cent of cats and dogs in the UK suffered from medical problems with their teeth and gums.

It noted that with increasing age, illness will outpace injury as a factor resulting in the need for dental treatment and owners should ensure they have adequate cat or dog insurance to cover the cost of these procedures.
