11 October 2005 New animal sanctuary shows need for adequate pet insurance
A local newspaper is teaming up with the RSPCA to fund the opening of a new animal sanctuary. The Sheffield Star is hoping to raise a million pounds for the charity, which will go towards building a centre designed to house 80 dogs and 86 cats. The RSPCA says that without extra funds the new facility can only be built in stages.
It will include an exercise yard, education, treatment and recovery rooms as well as a shop for animal-related goods. The site will also have facilities for smaller pets and incorporate an aviary for birds.
Kathern Whitlam, Sheffield RSPCA, branch chairwoman, told the paper: "We need the support of Sheffield's community to help us build our new animal centre in one go."
"Last year, thanks to the kindness of people living in and around Sheffield, the RSPCA in the city rehomed 791 dogs, 1,109 cats and 178 smaller animals, such as rabbits or hamsters... There's no way we can continue our work at this level without a fully operational animal centre," she added.
Newspaper editor Alan Powell said in a front-page feature that "t is a grim reality that this part of Britain is an animal blackspot for cruelty to pets. This is something which nobody takes pride. In fact, it is a matter of shame for the region."
