11 January 2006  Natural remedies to target arthritis in pets
Natural remedies can be used to alleviate pets' suffering of arthritis, according to one of America's top 'media vets'.

Dr Shawn Messonier, who is based at the Paws and Claws Animal Hospital and has a show on Martha Stewart Radio, advised pet owners that there are alternative methods to easing the pain brought on by arthritis.

Such conditions can prove costly for owners without pet insurance who could end up facing large vets bills to deal with the problem.

Writing for the Dallas Morning News, Dr Messonier advised that the natural joint supplement hyaluronan is one of the most effective ways of dealing with animals' discomfort.

"Hyaluronan reduces swelling at the site of injury by decreasing white blood cell migration and infiltration into the affected tissue…[it] inhibits the inflammation pathway, resulting in decreased pain," Dr Messonier said.

Cholodin Flex, a chewable treat for dogs, and Chologel, a potent gel which must only be administered to dogs, are both products which contain hyaluronan that could help to alleviate the pain caused by arthritis.

Dr Messonier added that vets should be consulted before giving pets supplements.
