22 December 2005  'Max' tops chart of pet names
As millions of people plan on buying a new pet this Christmas time US company Veterinary Pet Insurance has released the most popular names for pets from 2005 as inspiration.

Max tops the list for both dogs and cats, while Bailey, Buddy, Molly and Maggie remain popular for dogs.

Although some cat owners have given their pets more feline names such as Tigger, Tiger and Simba, a large number still choose traditional human names, including Chloe, Lucy and Oliver.

"Many pet owners consider their pets to be members of their family. As such, they give them human names like Max, Molly or Maggie, which underscores the fact that the human-animal bond is stronger than ever," says Dr. Carol McConnell, manager of veterinary education and services for VPI.

"New pet owners should spend quality time with their pets, especially in the first week, to establish daily patterns of behaviour and to recognise unique traits in the pet that translate into a name, such as 'Happy' or 'Diva'," Dr McConnell added.
