16 February 2006 Man's best friend receiving extravagant funerals
UK pet owners have been proving themselves worthy as a nation of animal lovers through extravagant gestures following the death of their animals. A new survey has revealed that choosing a coffin, ordering flowers, reciting poetry and even playing favourite songs are all par for the course for many pets' funerals in the UK.
Conducted by Direct Line Pet Insurance, the survey found that four in ten dog owners have held a ceremony to mark their dog's death, while three quarters of this number said that they viewed the funeral to be as important as a human's.
"Many people see their dog as one of the family, which explains why 82 per cent of the dog owners who held a funeral said a proper service to mark their passing is the least they deserve after a lifetime of devotion," commented Chris Price, head of Direct Line Pet Insurance.
As well as being an emotional drain, pet funerals have also proved to be a costly decision as one fifth of dog owners spend more than £100 while one in 20 spend more than £200.
