13 May 2006 Lost pets put online
Scottish pet owners will now be able to track down their lost animals online, whether they have pet insurance or not, thanks to a new service provided by East Dunbartonshire County Council. A section of the council's website has been given over to photos of stray pets, which the council hopes will help owners to be reunited with their furry friends, many of whom may not be covered by pet insurance, according to the Evening Times.
There are currently pictures of five unclaimed dogs on the site, which according to dog warden Morag Milne, will hopefully cut the long periods of time that strays are being left in kennels.
The council is also offering pet owners, both with and without pet insurance, the chance to have their cats and dogs microchipped, for a fee of £10, which would enable them to confirm ownership of their animals if they got lost.
Senior citizens and those claiming benefits can take advantage of the pet microchipping service free of charge.
Dogs which are picked up by the council's dog warden service more than once will be taken to Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (SSPCA) animal shelter where a fee of £25 per day will be charged to the owners, until the pet is collected.
