08 December 2005 Leading US firm calls for pet consideration
As the Christmas period is almost upon us a leading US speciality retailer for pet's needs has added to calls for people to seriously consider the practicalities of buying a pet for Christmas. Research released earlier this month found that 1.4 million people in the UK intend to buy a pet as a gift for themselves or for a loved one.
But with costs such as food, shelter and medical care, leading to many people purchasing pet insurance to counter the burden of vets' bills, PetSmart has advised Christmas shoppers to consider the lifelong aspects of pet ownership.
"Pets can be a wonderful addition to any family, but adopting or buying a pet is a major decision that should be made with careful consideration and research," the company said in a statement.
Particular issues to bear in mind are whether there is space for the pet, the amount of time it will take to train the animal as well as needs such as grooming and veterinary care.
