11 November 2006  Kidnapped dogs held to ransom
While many dog owners may hope that pet insurance and loving care would provide all the necessary protection for their pet, they could be concerned at reports of "dognapped" pets being held to ransom by criminals.

BBC Wales's Week In Week Out programme recently reported the case of Ivor and Janet Hancock from Cyon Valley, Wales, whose miniature schnauzer was stolen and held to a £200 ransom.

Maryanne Layton, whose pet was stolen from her home in Pembrokeshire four years ago, spoke to the BBC of her devastation at the theft.

"Some days I'm ok and then the other days I could be driving around and I could burst into tears, because your eyes are always looking and there is never a rest," she told the programme.

Direct Line Pet Insurance recently reported that 43 per cent of dog owners were concerned about their pets being kidnapped.

The company advised pet owners to inform both the police and pet insurance company in the event of theft, as the latter may provide cover for advertising and reward costs.
