15 July 2006 Keeping pets cool this summer is key
Holidaymakers planning to take their pets on long journeys this summer are advised to follow a few guidelines to ensure their pets are comfortable and don't get ill, as a trip to the vets, with or without pet insurance, can be an expensive ordeal. The number one consideration for those travelling with pets is never to leave them alone in a car on a sunny day, especially dogs, as animals can suffer heatstroke in a matter of minutes.
The RSPCA warns: "Even if you park your car in the shade, the position of the sun will change and leaving windows open or putting a bowl of water in the car does not help".
Severe panting, vomiting and diarrhoea are all signs of dehydration in animals and owners are advised that cats and dogs should drink "about 60 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day" according to news website, 50Connect.
If animals do become overheated, letting them lick ice is a good way for them to rehydrate steadily.
A pet first aid kit, a supply of old towels for clearing up any accidents, vet contact information and a supply of pet food, are all recommended items to take on long trips.
Holidaymakers heading overseas are also reminded not to forget to sort out a pet passport for their animal before going abroad.
