03 December 2005 Japan launches pet hotel
Japanese pet owners can now go one step further than simply providing basics for their pets, such as food, shelter and pet insurance, with the opening of a five-star pet hotel. Tokyo's Narita airport is the location for the 170-room Pet Inn Royal, which has space for up to 250 animals.
Pets fortunate enough to be placed there while their owners are on holiday can take advantage of a range of benefits, including veterinary and grooming services, an exercise field and staff who are on call 24 hours a day.
Owners who are nervous at the thought of leaving their beloved pet behind can stay with their pets between the time they check in and the time their flight number is called, reports the Guardian.
"Enjoy your travel overseas knowing that your pet is in safe hands," the hotel's website declares.
At around £20 a night for a basic room, which can increase quite dramatically for a suite of rooms, owners can feel rest assured that they are getting value for money with air conditioned rooms and purifiers.
With an estimated 19 million pets in Japan, the hotel will be hoping to tap into a vast potential source of income.
