06 June 2006 Holidaymakers advised to insure their dogs
Holidaymakers planning to take their pets away on holiday with them this year are advised not only to remember to plan ahead and apply for a pet passport but to ensure they have adequate pet insurance too. The advice from online pet magazine, K9 is if you don't already have a policy to take out pet insurance for your companion animals and to check with any travel operators you plan to use if they have regulations for pets in transit.
Pet owners are also advised to remember it will take time for a pet to adapt to new food and different climates and of course, a dog should never be left in a car outside, even if you have dog insurance or are parked in the shade.
K9 Magazine advises: "Preparation is key when travelling abroad with a pet; leave at least six months to get your pet passport organised, and of course double check your pet is allowed into your destination country.
"Your first port of call should be the vet so your pet can be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies."
June 2006 is National Microchipping Month and pet owners are being encouraged to contact the Kennel Club’s pet reunification service, Petlog to ensure their contact details are up to date.
