01 December 2006 'High demand' for Christmas pet purchases
A pet supply store has reported that, in addition to purchasing food, pet insurance and accessories, large numbers of owners are also buying Christmas gifts for their pets.Australian-based Hamish McBeth notes that Christmas is seen by some as an opportunity to shower their pet with love.
Hazel Clarke, director of Hamish McBeth, said: "It is not unusual for someone to buy three collars with matching leashes for their dog, a couple of name tags and a toy."
She added that some owners spend as much on their pets as they would their partner or children.
Earlier this month, Urbanhound published its pet insurance guide, aiming to help pet owners make the correct decisions when purchasing cover for their pet, noting that vet's bills continue to outpace the rate of inflation.
For those less concerned about the expense of pet ownership, online retailer PetGadgets.com recently advertised a number of "luxury" presents for pets on the new holiday section of its website, including a $25,000 (£12,800) mansion for three dogs.
