11 November 2005  Help with veterinary costs could have saved dog's life
Two pet owners who failed to take their dog to the vet despite its face being eaten away have been given a three month suspended prison sentence, highlighting the need for pet insurance as part of responsible ownership.

Phillip Tomas Daines and Caroline Anne Gubb from Abercwmboi in Wales were given a three month suspended sentence and banned from keeping any animal for five years after they pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to their black and white border collie, Muffy.

RSPCA inspector Rachel Jones visited the couple's home and found Muffy with a legion so large on the side of his face that it appeared as though half of his face was missing. He had to be put to sleep by a vet to prevent any further suffering.

The couple claimed that they could not afford to take Muffy to the vet for treatment.

"This is an extreme case of neglect which could have easily been avoided if the defendants had sought help for the veterinary costs," said RSPCA Inspector Jones.

Currently just 17 per cent of dogs and 11 per cent of cats are covered by pet insurance, according to the RSPCA, but with pets needing on average two trips to the vets every year, the RSPCA have advised that more pet owners consider pet insurance.
