03 November 2005 Good pet insurance needed for bonfire night stress
Pet owners have been warned that the noises and smells of Guy Fawkes night could leave dogs and cats traumatised. Sainsbury's Bank said that up to 5,000 pets could be treated for both distress and injuries caused by fireworks, which it estimates could cost pet owners £1.6 million in vets fees.
It recommends that dogs are walked during the day to avoid the fireworks at night, as well as keeping pets indoors if holding parties in back gardens. The bank also recommends that individuals look for good pet insurance cover.
"Our research shows that during the course of a year, as many as 40 per cent of pet owners will see their cats and dogs suffer from behavioural problems such as depression, moodiness, fatigue and loss of appetite," said David Pickett of Sainsbury's Bank.
"In some cases vets are prescribing sedatives for upset pets. Don't let the noise from fireworks be the cause of this kind of upset, take special care and keep your pets inside this November 5th."
Sainsbury's Bank recommends that consumers look for insurance which covers vets fees in excess of £3,500 for both dogs and cats.
