18 December 2006 German shepherd wins RSPCA bravery award
While some owners may anticipate the need for dog insurance for standard illnesses and accidents their pet may encounter, a German shepherd in Australia had more trouble than some after being shot twice by intruders broke into his master's home. After three intruders broke into the home of Manuel da Silva, Rocky, aged two, jumped in front of his owner, taking two bullets before the gunmen fled.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals New South Wales (RSPCA NSW) gave Rocky an award for his bravery.
Bernie Murphy, chief executive of RSPCA NSW, said: "Animals are an important part in the lives of many people and they often surprise us with their actions."
He added that the Rocky's actions were an example of the closeness that exists between humans and animals.
The Daily Telegraph in Australia reports that Rocky's treatment to date has cost around AUD$16,000 (£6,410).
In 2003, pet insurance firm More Than claimed that German shepherds are the "unluckiest" breed of dog, statistically suffering more accidents than all others.
