16 January 2007 Firm launches lost-pet recovery system
A global healthcare firm has announced the launch of a system aimed to assist owners, such as those with pet insurance, in finding their lost pets.Schering-Plough has launched the new HomeAgain Proactive Pet Network, noting that one in three pets on average is lost at some point, while 90 per cent of those without identification are not found.
The system operates through notifying a 24-hour call centre, with dispatchers informing shelters and vets of the missing pet, along with its description and photo to aid identification.
Brent Saunders, senior vice president of Schering-Plough, commented that being proactive in animal identification was key, with the company consequently partnering with shelters and vets to develop this position.
"Microchip implantation and registration in the national database are vital, but the new proactive recovery goes much further and hopefully will result in may reunions," he said.
In the past, pet insurance provider Sainsbury's Bank has advised owners to ensure their pet wears a collar and microchip and is always supervised to reduce the risks of going missing.
