12 November 2005 Finalists selected for RSPCA Dog of the Year Award
Five dogs have been selected as the finalists in the RSPCA's Dog of the Year competition as part of an effort to raise the profile of rescue dogs and the level of care that pets need. All the dogs in the final highlight the extremes of suffering which pets can go through if their owners fail to look after them properly.
Without adequate pet insurance, the costs facing pet owners in the event of illnesses and accidents can seem a daunting challenge which can lead to neglect.
The RSPCA has encouraged people to vote for the year's most "courageous canine".
It is hoped that the competition, which is in its fourteenth year of running, will "highlight the plight of rescue dogs and encourage people that are thinking of getting a dog to consider adopting a rescue dog", according to the charity.
The five dogs were selected from 60 regional competitions and were judged on their overall condition, character and story.
Each of the dogs' stories and pictures will appear in the Sunday Express this weekend, and the winner will be announced on November 20th.
