07 January 2006 Extra care for pets during cold spell needed
With reports of further cold weather for Britain expected, pet owners are being advised to ensure their pets are safe and healthy during the remaining winter months. Research by Saga has revealed the number of weather-related problems that can prove costly for owners without pet insurance.
Ice balls can develop in pets' feet, while gritting salts can cause stomach upsets if ingested. To avoid problems such as these, which can prove to be painful and may require veterinary treatment, the insurer advises washing pets' feet each time after a walk.
"It is apparently going to be a bitterly cold winter this year and although we remember to wrap up warm ourselves we sometimes forget about our pets," commented Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga.
"The freezing temperatures and poor conditions can make our pets very vulnerable during the winter and we should do all we can to keep them as comfortable as possible."
Further advise from Saga Pet Insurance includes making sure that water bowls left outside do not freeze over and that animals with short hair are protected with winter coats.
