Expensive pet insurance 'does not equal best'

19 January 2006 Expensive pet insurance 'does not equal best'
Expensive, top of the range pet insurance policies may not always be the most effective cover for pets, a recent study found. According to the Veterinary Nurse Practice Viewpoint Survey, 96 per cent of the 300 vets polled said that the most expensive cover did not necessarily equal the most appropriate cover.
Pet insurance providers are responding to such an issue by providing policies that more adequately reflect the needs of pet owners.
Tesco Pet Insurance has adapted its cover to include its 'Extra' policy, which offers £4,000 per condition for an unlimited amount of time.
Commenting on the decision to create a new policy, Allan Burns, head of Tesco Pet Insurance, said: "We don't want our customers paying for cover they're unlikely to use. Many top level policies offer vast, and in some cases unlimited amounts of cover.
"However, our own statistics show that in the majority of cases £4,000 is more than adequate to treat long-term conditions."
