26 January 2006  Exercise urged for obese pets
Pet owners are being encouraged to make sure that their animals are given at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise a day.

Veterinarians have warned that it is not just people who need to shake the post-Christmas pounds, but their pets also.

Dr Lorraine Corriveau of Purdue University urged people to include their animals in their new year exercise regimes, emphasising the fact that 25 per cent of cats and dogs are obese.

Commenting on the effect of obesity, Dr Corriveau told United Press International: "Obese dogs have an increased prevalence of heart disease and increased blood pressure. Both dogs and cats are at increased risk for diabetes."

A lack of sufficient exercise could also result in skin problems, breathing difficulties and joint problems, leading to expensive veterinary bills that may prove a burden for those without pet insurance.

Research released earlier this month by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy found that obesity was the number one problem facing dogs' health.
