30 March 2007  Emergency visits 'costing UK business millions'
Emergency visits to the vets are costing businesses in the UK millions of pounds each year, a pet insurance firm has claimed, with pet owners taking time off work either as compassionate leave or lying to their manager of their whereabouts in these instances.

More Than reports that British industry loses approximately £19 million annually from such incidents, while a further 58 per cent of pet owners will use their own annual leave for vet visits.

Furthermore, the dog insurance provider reports that nearly half of these visits could be unnecessary, with owners often requiring advice rather than emergency medical treatment.

Mike Holliday-Williams, managing director of More Than, said: "Pets are an important part of the family so when a pet becomes ill, many people don't hesitate to take time off from work to rush them to the vet."

He added that these visits can impact upon other employees, who can be forced to oversee the business in their colleague's absence.

Last year, pet insurance provider esure.com reported that the cost of seeing a vet at weekends and bank holidays can be five times higher than it would be during regular working hours, leading 30 per cent of pet owners to admit they would delay a visit to the vet because of the expense.
