21 August 2006  Dogs feel jealousy, research claims
You can't yet claim on your pet insurance if your dog comes down with a case of the green eyes, but new research conducted by scientists at the University of Portsmouth claims that dogs are capable of feeling a number of complex emotions, including jealousy.

The research conducted by Dr Paul Morris and Christin Doe is due to be presented at the BA Festival of Science in Norfolk in September.

Most scientists contend that such feelings can only be held by much more developed life forms, such as humans and chimpanzees.

However, Dr Morris has proposed that dogs' behaviour appears to exhibit signs of jealousy consistently in certain situations.

"In every report of jealousy in dogs you had the situation where the dog's primary carer was being given affection by an interloper.

"The most common reaction in these circumstances was for the dog to physically try to push in between the carer and the interloper."

Dr. Morris is a senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth whose research in psychology takes an ecological approach, with a focus on secondary emotions in children and animals.
