20 June 2006 Dogs die in hot cars
Dog owners are being urged not to leave their pets alone in cars this summer, whether they have pet insurance or not, as research shows that the temperature inside a stationary vehicle can rise to double that outside within six to ten minutes. New figures from Halifax pet insurance have revealed that more than half of the British adult population have witnessed an animal shut up in a vehicle on a hot day.
Nearly a million animal-lovers admitted to having attempted to save a trapped pet by forcing or smashing a vehicle's window and four per cent confessed to actually breaking into a car to rescue a dog.
However, one in three people admitted to doing nothing.
Senior products manager at Halifax Pet Insurance, Mathew Long, said: "Anyone that sees an animal suffering inside a hot car should phone both the RSPCA and the Police immediately.
"It might take time for them to arrive so it is important to try and find the owner as well for example using the tannoy system in a Supermarket."
While the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' (RSPCA's) chief veterinary officer, Steve Cheetham warns that there is no safe condition in which to leave an animal confined on a hot day.
If passers-by witness a dog left unattended in a vehicle in hot weather, the RSPCA recommends that they report it immediately on their hotline number: 0870 55 55 999.
