08 December 2006 Dogs beat cats in pet insurance rates
While there have been a higher number of pet cats than dogs in the UK since the mid-90s, a higher percentage of dogs are being covered by pet insurance.Figures from data collection and research firm Defaqto reveal that 17 per cent of domestic felines are covered by cat insurance, with the percentage of pups covered by dog insurance nearly double at 32 per cent.
Brian Brown, head of the insight team at Defaqto, said: "Many owners, particularly of cats and non-pedigree dogs, have never experienced a large veterinary claim and therefore do not necessarily perceive a need for cover."
He added that some owners are forgoing the purchase of pet insurance and instead using "self-insurance" and paying for vet bills as they occur.
In March, Direct Line claimed that 12 per cent of dogs had picked up an illness following a stay in kennels in their owner's absence, while four per cent suffered an injury.
