31 January 2006  Dogs 'as stressed out as their owners'
A recent survey has revealed that over a quarter of dogs in the UK are as stressed out as their over-worked owners.

Around a third suffer from vomiting and diarrhoea as a result of neglect, it was found, as a direct result of today's 'all work no play' culture.

Experts believe that the social nature of our canine companions means that they desperately need regular contact with humans or other animals. Denying them this contact is thought to have a negative effect on their psychological well-being.

"Our change in lifestyle over the past few decades has definitely contributed to more stress in pets generally. We have more work, more things to do, smaller properties and fences surrounding our homes," veterinary behaviourist Quixi Sonntag told news agency AFP.

"Dogs are very perceptive and they certainly do pick up things that we humans would not. They are very sensitive to our needs and feelings," she added.

All is not lost for busy dog owners however. Ms Sonntag recommended enriching a dog's environment by providing them with bigger spaces to run around in and giving them stimulating toys to play with. Most importantly, owners should set aside time to engage with their pets.

Lessening dog owners own stress levels is also a good idea, by ensuring that factors such as adequate pet insurance are taken care of.
